HERITAGE

IN HONOUR OF THE ZUM WILDEN AFFEN

Set amid rolling hills and fields bordered by the Black Forest, the Monkey 47 Distillery has its roots in a country guesthouse set up by Royal Air Force Wing Commander Montgomery ’Monty’ Collins.

The Monkey’s Journey to The Black Forest

Born in colonial Madras, Montgomery Collins was posted to the British sector of divided Berlin after the end of the Second World War. Devoted to the rebuilding of Berlin Zoo, he came to sponsor an egret monkey by the name of Max. Eventually, he moved to the Northern Black Forest region and named his guesthouse Zum wilden Affen, or The Wild Monkey, in honour of Max.

Inspired by the abundant supply of Juniper, pure well water and a variety of special herbs and plant ingredients, the guesthouse soon played host to a distillery. In 2008, the estate would be transformed by Alexander Stein into the highly reputed Monkey 47 Distillery.
